Lot Essay

The present watercolour shows the Qutb Minar in the centre, begun by Qutb-ud-din Aybak, completed by his successors and later restored by Colonel Smith. On the left is the stump of the Alai Minar, the tower begun by Ala-ud-din Khalji but soon abandoned. To the right is the Alai Darwaza added in 1311 as the main southern gateway into the mosque.
These miniature works were popular during the early 1800s due to the increasing demand by those visiting the monuments to have a souvenir of them.
