Lot Essay

Shah Jahan came to the throne in 1628 and was deposed in 1658 by his son, Aurangzeb, during the civil war. Whilst in power, Shah Jahan was responsible for moving the capital back to Delhi from Agra. He died in 1666 and was buried next to his favourite wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, known as Mumtaz Mahal (Elect of the Palace) for whom the Taj Mahal was built.
The view of Delhi in the background is not a topographically accurate depiction of the city.
