Capt. Taylor (1830-79) was the first photographer to travel to Nepal to photograph the topography and the ruling family in 1863, while Assistant Resident in Khatmandu. He was also a member of the Amateur Photographic Association, one of the leading photographic societies, which flourished during the 1860s and early 1870s. It is not known when he may have travelled to southern India to make this portrait.
