Sample album containing twenty-seven (of a numbered series of thirty-seven) albumen prints, each approx. 7½ x 9½ in., loosely inserted at corners only or loosely laid in album, numbered in red crayon on verso and on mount, some titled on verso, each titled in ink on mount, titled and priced in ink on second front blank, morocco-backed green cloth (front cover detached), large 4to.

Lot Essay

The photographer's sample album, possibly the work of Major (later General) Francis Dawson (1827-1911) of the Madras Army, who was officiating Deputy Judge Advocate for the Southern Division in 1865.

Subjects include views of the Rock, Tank, Palace and temples at Trichinopoly; a portrait of the High Priest of the Rock Temples; the Great Gun, temples, monuments, the main street, the Rajah's Palace and the Great Pagoda at Tanjore.
