Lot Essay

The palmette border and triumphal procession derives from an 'Etruscan' vase in the collection of Sir William Hamilton illustrated in d'Hancarville's Collection of Etruscan, Greek, and Roman Antiquities, 1766-7. An 'Etruscan' oval caddy, acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1919 features the same border, but is mounted with glass medallions (see G. Walkling, Tea Caddies, London, 1988, fig. 51).
