The prototype for the mirrored pier-table with griffin monopodiae was executed for the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d. 1841) and illustrated in his guide to his Duchess Street mansion/museum entitled Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, plate VII. Their stylised palm-garter relates to that featured on the suite of seat furniture supplied in 1807 to Colonel Hughes for Kinmel Park, Denbighshire by Gillows of Oxford Street. A Grecian couch supplied to Colonel Hughes, circa 1805, was sold by Mr. Edward Sarofim in these Rooms, 16 November 1995, lot 143.
