Lot Essay

This chair is similar to a set acquired around 1770 for Penicuik House, Scotland, and attributed to Messrs. Francis and William Brodie of Edinburgh, while the reed-enriched and splayed legs correspond to those of a 'Chinese chair' of this period attributed to Messrs. Young, Hamilton and Trotter (both illustrated in F. Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pls. 25 and 46).
A similar open armchair was sold by Archibald Stirling of Keir, Keir, Perthshire, Christie's house sale, 22 May 1995, lot 103.
