One stamped W. BLACKBURN
Each with a turned tapering and reeded top rail with two brass bands, above a scrolled X-shaped splat centred by a horse-shoe shaped tablet with inlaid brass foliage motif, the scrolls with brass rosettes, with serpentine stiles above a caned seat with loose seat squab-cushions covered in brown chequed material with yellow piping, the outside corners with brass rosettes, on sabre legs, one chair stamped on the underside of the back seat-rail W. BLACKBURN, another stamped SS on underside of front seat-rail, three chairs with scratched inscription HARRIS on the underside of the seat rail, restorations (6)
Lot Essay
The stamp may well be that of William Blackburn of 14 Dean Street, Soho, London, a chair and sofa maker, who is recorded in 1828-9 (see Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p.77).
