Rugendas was in Peru from December 1842 until July 1844 and his first drawings in Lima date from 1842. Apart from his views in the district and portrait commissions from Generals and other personalities, he concentrated on the ordinary people of Lima: 'er widmete sich gewiss noch Studien aus dem einfachen Volke, den Indianischen Arbeitern, den cholos oder cholas, aber selbst bei diesen - man sehe seine Negerinnen bei der Wasche - bildete er gern kokette Anmut und bewusste Grazie.' (G. Richert, Johann Moritz Rugendas, Berlin, 1959, p. 54.)
Many of his works from this Peruvian period are in the Graphische Sammlung, Munich
