Lot Essay

The artist was the Commercial Secretary to the British Legation in Brazil, arriving there in 1833 and staying until 1841. He undertook several trips in South America before retiring in 1860. He was the son of the English Orientalist and Diplomat of the same name. 'Sir R' is presumably Sir Ralph Ouseley (1772-1842), a British officer who served with the Portuguese forces in Brazil, and presumably the artist's uncle.
