Lot Essay

In 1890 an armed pioneer column of one hundred and ninety two miners and settlers guarded by five hundred troopers of the newly formed British South Africa Company Police established a camp at the site of the present day Harare. They had little success and Rhodes's company was close to bankrupcy by 1891, a year after he had declared Rhodesia for the British Empire. The settlers persisted, opening up Matabeleland following the raid on Lobengula's Great Place, Bulawayo springing up on this latter site in another wave of speculation.

Early views of present day Harare remain extremely rare.
