According to the legend, the Queen Mother of the Western Paradise invited the Immortals to her birthday party to share her Peaches of Immortality. The Eight Immortals accepted the invitation and on their way to the party, they transformed a tree-stump into a boat to cross the Eastern Sea. Cf. the similar carving illustrated by I. Yee and L.T.C. Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part I, no.175, p.490 from the Walter Edmund Lutz Bamboo Collection in the Denver Art Museum, and the simpler version in the collection of Dr. Ho Shun-fung, ibid., no.111, p.356
