Zhou Shunchang was born in Wu, present-day Hangzhou, in Jiangsu Province. His zi was Jingwen and his hao Liaozhou. He received the degree of Jinshi in the 41st year of Wanli (1613) and became an official in Fuzhou Province. On violating the imperial loyalty, he was arrested, imprisoned and condemned to death. In the first year of Chongzhen (1628), however, he was rehabilitated.
