Born in Guangdong, Zhu Yuanzhi moved to America at the age of fifteen. In 1925, he entered the California Academy of Art to study painting under Otis Oldfield. His first one-man show was held at the Modern Gallery in San Francisco in 1926, where he also met his first patrons (Prince & Princess Achille Murat), who encouraged him to go to France. He had several one-man shows during his stay in Paris. In 1932, Zhu was invited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York to take part in an exhibition of murals. Unfortunately, Zhu suffered a mental breakdown in 1945, from which he never really recovered. He passed away at the age of 57. In 1968, the Robert Scholkopf Gallery in New York held a retrospective exhibition of his works in honour of his memory.
