Painted in fine detail with a portrait of the great historian Sima Qian and inscribed at one side, the reverse with a mountainous river landscape with a solitary fisherman in his boat, stopper

The inscription illuminates the portrait, and may be translated as: Sima Qian, China's famous scholar and historian of the second century B.C. and author of the hundred chapters of the 'Shiji' ('Records of the Historian').
