Lot Essay

This follows the format of John Arnold & Son pocket chronometers but it would appear to always have been a marine chronometer. It is almost certain to have had his Z balance which, together with the fusee chain, has become lost.
Vaudrey Mercer, John Arnold & Son, A.H.S., 1972, page 291 records No. 421/720 as a small pocket chronometer and it is illustrated, plate 87, where it is stated to have a three armed YZ non-ferrous balance. Page 212 dates No. 490/791 1794.
