TWO LACQUER BOXES AND COVERS
19th Century and late 16th Century respectively
The first, a gold lacquered box shaped as two rectangular boxes decorated in gold hiramakie, iroe hiramakie, okibirame and inlay depicting Kojima Takanori writing a poem on a cherry tree, the sides similarly decorated with a stylized ho-o bird, hare and flowerheads, nashiji interior; and a roironuri ground cylindrical box decorated in gold hiramakie, hirame and mother-of-pearl inlay with vine leaves, cherry blossom and a cart, (some old wear)

Lot Essay

Kojima Takanori fought in the battle of Genko for the Emperor Godaigo. They lost and when the Emperor was to be exiled, Takanori carved the poem as a message to him.
