cover "SHIPLETTER" handstamp: 1854 entire "p.ship Perdigo(?) via Algoa Bay" to Cape Town, showing (on the flap) Port Elizabeth and Cape Town datestamps and, on the address panel, the extremely rare and distinctive boxed "SHIPLETTER" handstamp, very fine in dull red. This handstamp was listed as Cape of Good Hope HS.23 in the Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia Volume 2 (Africa), but was not mentioned in either Jurgens or Goldblatt: one other example is currently known (and was sold in South Africa in 1994)
