Lot Essay

Dr. Bruce Laughton identifies this work with 'Girl in a Large Hat', circa 1892, which he was unable to trace when researching his catalogue raisonné. George Moore had described this work in a letter to Steer in 1909 as the picture of 'a girl in a black hat' (see D.S. MacColl, loc. cit.). It is also the hat and apron of the London coster girls of the period.
