Lady Elsie Charlotte Meyer (1885-1954) was the daughter of Sir Carl Meyer, Chairman of de Beers. She appears behind the sofa with her brother Frank in Sargent's portrait of her mother Adèle (née Levis), 'Mrs. Carl Meyer and her Children' in 1896 (Private Collection). When this portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in 1897 (no.291), it prompted Henry James to proclaim that it was 'so far higher a triumph of painting than anything else in the place that, meeting it early in his course, the spectator turns from it with a grateful sense that the whole message of art has on this occasion, so far as he is concerned, been uttered'.
(see S. Olson, John Singer Sargent his Portrait, London, 1986, p.207).

Elsie married St. John Lambert in 1909, the year after her charcoal portrait, and Captain Harry Hulbert in 1927.

We are very grateful to Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray for their help in cataloguing this lot which will be included in the forthcoming J.S. Sargent catalogue raisonné by Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray, in collaboration with Warren Adelson and Elizabeth Oustinoff.
