A fine Solomon Islands figure
Roviana, 19th century
Seated with both hands held beneath the prognathus jaw, the eyes with fretted pearl-shell oval inlays, the ears with carved discs within distended lobes, dark glossy patina, with two shell arm bands secured about the body, of red and white shell beads and coconut-shell beads divided by turtle shell panels on plaited fibre ties

Lot Essay

A truncation below the base would appear to indicate that this fine old figure was probably the finial for a post placed before a spirit or canoe house. The shell armbands would not originally have dressed the figure, but were probably collected at the same time and attached by whoever brought it to England: we have not risked destroying the fibres by attempting to undo them.
