A pair of rare Central or East African figures
perhaps Tabwa, 19th century
The male standing with arms carved free of the body, right hand on hip and left raised to shoulder, the head with small recessed eyes, large mouth with engraved teeth, a notched band across hairline and down the centre of the nose, the hemispherical coiffure aligned over the ears to meet at bridge of nose, the flexed legs on large feet, the female standing in similar stance but with left hand placed beneath left breast, her head with notched cheeks and hatched coiffure, (right forearm and part of right foot deficient), each figure with blackened surface leaving ornaments and scarfication pale, each wearing sections of a brigade tie, the male with additional bronze ring about the neck and attached 1926 medal
