Lot Essay

Fantin executed several studies of hollyhocks, of which this particularly large canvas is amongst the finest. Hollyhocks were extremely popular in late 19th century England and France during the second half of the 19th century. In the 1870s the French firm of Vilmorin listed more than eighty varieties in its catalogue.

It was paintings such as Roses Trémières, shown at the Royal Academy in 1890, that established Fantin's position in England as one of the finest living painters of flowers.
