MARSELAER, Fridericus de. Legatus libri duo. Antwerp: Plantin Press (Balthasar Moretus I), 1626.
Median 4° (228 x 170mm). 274 leaves (last blank). Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Cornelis Galle after Theodoor van Loon. ORIGINAL PRESENTATION BINDING, brown calf over pasteboard, decorated in gold, the sides panelled with fillets and a cable-roll, a floral tool in the corners, the author's arms (a bend fusilly) and motto Arte et Marte blocked in centre of the front cover, his impresa (two crossed leafy sprays and scallops linked by ropework) and motto j'attens on back cover, a flower tool in compartments of spine, gilt edges, (slightly rubbed). Provenance: Count Wolffgang Engelbert von Auersperg, "capitaneus" of the province of Carniola and "consiliarius intimus" to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III (inscription dating the entry into his private library catalogue 1655).
Revised second edition of an early book on the art of diplomacy in modern Europe. The original edition appeared in 1618 in octavo. The author had a number of copies of both editions bound with his arms, mottoes and emblem stamped on the covers, no doubt for presentation to friends and diplomats (in the present case Count von Auersperg). Marselaer used a number of different blocks over the years; those employed here are identical with the ones on the Brussels Bibl. Roy. copy of the first edition and on the Baron Verhaegen copy of the second edition (see De Jonghe d'Ardoye, L'Armorial belge du bibliophile). Bibliotheca Belgica M-369.
