FIRST EDITION of the collected works of Politian. The present copy was previously owned by the Italian poet, Domenico Lazzarini. Known for his attacks on the Jesuits (having been educated by them), Lazzarini composed his best work in poetry, imitating Tuscan models from Dante to Politian. The long note written by him on a3v contests the humanist Bartolommeo Ricci's criticism of the language of Politian and Apuleius and instead praises it for its elegance and eloquence. In a nice rhetorical conceit, given the comparison between Politian and Cicero as incomparable writers of letters, Lazzarini ends his argument with a favorite Ciceronian scansion. Lazzarini has also written a few corrections and annotations in the text. Renouard (17:4) considered "cette rare édition, l'une des plus belles qui soient sorties de l'imprimerie Aldine."
