VESLINGIUS, Johannes. Syntagma anatomicum. Padua: Paulus Frambottus, 1647.
Median 4° (248 x 182mm). Engraved frontispiece of an anatomical theatre and 24 full-page anatomical engravings by Giovanni Georgi. Contemporary vellum over pasteboard. Provenance: Roth 1892 (inscription).
FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of one of the most important anatomical works of the 17th century. It is very much rarer than commonly assumed as most copies that appear on the market belong to a generally unsuspected counterfeit edition printed by the atlas publisher Johannes Janssonius of Amsterdam. For its identification, see F. Oyens, "Jan Janssen as counterfeiter and pirate", in: Quaerendo volume IX (1979), p.351. FINE COPY.
