POUCHOT, Francois. Mémoires sur la dernière guerre de l'Amérique Septentrionale entre la France et l'Angleterre. Yverdon: 1781.

3 volumes, 12° (154 x 95mm). Half-titles, titles with wood engraved vignettes, 3 folding engraved maps and plans comprising plans of Fort Niagara and Fort Levis, and a general map of the area of conflict on the eastern seaboard. (Title and half-title volume III detached, small tear to margin of general map.) Contemporary sheep, flat backed spine gilt in compartments with morocco lettering-pieces (rubbed), blue edges. Provenance: Caissotte? (gilt ownership signature on upper covers).

A rare and early account of the English and French conflict in North America 1754-60. François Pouchot was a captain in the Bearn regiment, in command of the Niagara and Levis forts, and his interesting account of the French operations also includes considerable detail of Indian warfare, and accounts of their manners and customs. The general map in this copy has contemporary annotations in red ink, detailing a 35 day journey up the River Lawrence from Montreal to Fort Levis. Curiously, both Howes and Sabin call for 398 pp. in the third volume. This would appear to be a misprint derived from Sabin who notes volume III as 397 (1), the 397 a misprint for 379; this accords with this copy with 379 (1)p including the addition, table and final approbation leaf at the end. cf. Sabin 64707; cf.Howes 516. (3)
