CAGE, John (1912-1995). Autograph manuscript sketches signed of pieces from Etudes Australes, comprising transcriptions to musical staves of numbers XIV, 1,2 and 3 and XV 1 and 2, and tracings from star maps XIV and XV, written as musical notation and numbers in pencil and blue crayon on printed manuscript sheets and one sheet of lined paper, 6 pages, folio, (314 x 240mm. and 352 x 278mm), one sheet framed and glazed, the remaining mounted loose on card within perspex frames.
Etudes Australes consists of 32 pieces transcribed for piano and were written in 1974-1975. Cage extracted the notation of the work by applying a notational policy towards astronomic star maps.
These sketches use a series of numbers from 1-3 as a first sketch towards creating a score.
Sold with an LP recording of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (1946-48) performed by Maro Ajemian.
