Lot Essay

The Kindergarten series was apparently advertised on the cover of the second edition of Sikhas Khulin, Warsaw, 1922, as consisting of three small books: The Miller, his Wife and their Millstones; The Hen who wanted a Comb; and The Bear. However, all three are obviously of extreme rarity, as copies are not even recorded in the comprehensive bibliography Y.Y. Coehn, Jewish Publications in the Soviet Union 1917-60, and there is no evidence of any other copy in existence.
Dating from 1919-20 these illustrations show Lissitsky's first experiments with three-dimensional supremist motifs of the circle and triangle combined here with traditional children's folklore characters.
