Lot Essay

The lithograph represents Emilienne d'Alençon and Mariquita rehearsing for the pantomime ballet, the Bal des Quatr'z'Arts, which had its première at the Folies Bergère on 16 December 1893. It appeared in L'Escarmouche, No. 4, on 3 December 1893, which predicted that 'the pantomime ballet by Messieurs Courteline and Marsolleau will be a great success, adding yet another triumph to those already put on by this theatre - like that of Loïe Fuller, who is receiving tumultuous applause evening after evening'.
The artist made another lithograph of a scene from the same pantomime, which appeared in L'Escarmouche the day after the première (see lot 711)
