This type of representation of Christ falling under the weight of the cross on the road to Calvary was extremely popular in Germany and the Netherlands. Christ is shown being attacked by Roman soldiers, while Simon of Cyrene takes up the cross, and Saint Veronica kneels in attendance with the Sudarium, the cloth that received the imprint of Christ's face. Over to one side is the fainting Virgin, supported by Saint John the Evangelist and the Holy Women, with a crowd of subsidiary figures beyond. A similarly crowded, horizontal composition with most of the same features is found in an engraving by Martin Schongauer.
