Lot Essay

The present piece was originally one half of the lid of an incense boat, whose function was to act as a container for incense before its transference to a censer. For an exemplary general consideration of incense boats, which survive in smaller numbers than most other Limoges liturgical objects, see Rupin, loc. cit.
