Lot Essay

This type of bull, which is closely based on ancient prototypes, goes back to an invention of Giambologna's recorded in an inventory of the collection of Benedetto Gondi in 1609. It was one of his most admired creations, whether on its own or paired with a walking lion (Avery and Radcliffe, loc. cit.).
