Lot Essay

The terracotta on which the present group is based is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Pope-Hennessy, loc. cit.). It is usually associated with a passage in Vasari's Life of Tribolo concerning a marble group executed by Pierino for the Medici villa at Castello. Interestingly, this bronze pre-dates the re-positioning of the head of the child on the right, which had been incorrectly restored.
