The figure of Jupiter relates to the one on the top of a circular drawing of The Earth in the Circle of the Heavens in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, dated by Elizabeth Cropper to 1642-4 (fig. 1), op. cit., no. 74, illustrated. The figure is reversed in the Berlin drawing. Two other related studies for the Berlin sheet, close in style to this drawing, are on the London art market and in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, Cropper, op. cit., figs. 74a-b. Elizabeth Cropper proposed that the Berlin drawing, which includes the four seasons, was intended as a frontispiece for the set of four prints of the Seasons.
Elizabeth Cropper mentions two other versions of the present drawing, one known through a print, which shows the eagle more completely drawn, and another, probably copied from the drawing in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.
