Lot Essay
This drawing, and the following lot, are from the series of God the Father in the Clouds supported by Angels and Cherubs, J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, p. 32. The highest number recorded by James Byam Shaw was 102, though one numbered 115, corrected to 206, was sold at Christie's, 12 April 1983, lot 107, illustrated. In a drawing sold at Christie's, 26 April 1963, lot 337, illustrated, the pose of God the Father is similar to this drawing. Fourteen drawings from the series are in the Museo Correr, Venice. Teresio Pignatti proposed that the series was drawn around 1790, T. Pignatti, Disegni veneti del Settecento nel Museo Correr di Venezia, Venice, 1964, under no. 111.
James Byam Shaw suggested (op. cit., p. 32) that Domenico drew his inspiration for this series from the altarpiece painted by his father in 1759 in the Duomo, Este, A. Pallucchini, L'opera completa di Giambattista Tiepolo, Milan, 1968, no. 248, illustrated.
