Priscilla Muller has kindly suggested the attribution and compared this drawing with other works by the artist, D. Angulo and A.E. Pérez Sánchez, A Corpus of Spanish Drawings, Madrid 1600-1650, London, 1977, nos. 282-285, illustrated.
The composition is inspired by Dürer's woodcut of Christ Crowned with Thorns, Illustrated Bartsch 7, no. 34.
José Leonardo trained in Madrid with Eugenio Cajés, and was influenced by Velazquez, as is apparent in his battle paintings for the Hall of Kingdoms at Buen Retiro, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
