with an inscription on the verso of the frame 'fxaylnctounyext. 1764 Falconet', an anagram of FALCONET with the letters xyntuyx inserted respectively between every letter; black chalk and black lead on prepared paper

Lot Essay

Another self-portrait of the artist of 1773 is in the Nancy Museum, along with a portrait of his wife, L. Réau, Etienne-Maurice Falconet, Paris, 1922, pl. II.
In 1766, Pierre-Etienne was sent by his father, Etienne-Maurice, to study portraiture with Reynolds in London. He stayed in England until 1773, and exhibited pictures and drawings at the Incorporated Society of Artists and at the Royal Academy. In 1773 he joined his father in Russia and married his father's pupil Marie-Anne Collot.
Two chalk portraits by Falconet were sold at Christie's, New York, 10 January 1990, lot 124 and 13 January 1993, lot 96, both illustrated.
