Eunice Williams compares the present drawing with Amand's Roman views exhibited at the Galerie Cailleux, Paris, Le Rouge et le Noir, 1991, nos. 52-55, illustrated, and at the British Museum, London, French Landscape Drawings and Sketches of the 18th Century in 1977. A further group of red chalk landscapes by Amand, from Mariette's collection, are in the Louvre, J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire Général des Dessins de l'Ecole Française, Adam à Bouchardon, Paris, 1933, nos. 27-40, illustrated.
Amand, who had won the prix de Rome for history painting in 1756 and who had stayed in Rome from 1759 to 1763, was described by Mariette in his Abecedario: 'C'était un bon sujet qui promettait, mais qui né timide et nullement fait pour se produire, languissait et étoit presque sans ouvrage; il en prit du chagrin, se découragea et abrégea ainsi ses jours...J'ai de ses dessins de paysage, faits à Rome, qui sont d'une belle touche'.
