A SCOTTISH VICTORIAN MAHOGANY TRIPLE-CHAIRBACK SETTEE
The waved toprail hung with tasseled drapery and rockwork C-scrolls and terminating in flowerheads, above a pierced baluster-shaped splat with interlaced strapwork and central lozenge, the outscrolled arms carved with C-scrolls and acanthus, above a drop-in seat covered in florally-patterned tapestry on a mustard ground, on acanthus and cabochon-headed cabriole legs and claw-and-ball feet, extensive restorations to splat, one back leg spliced, one front leg repaired, the tapestry seat with the Bute Coronet and weaver's mark A and initials R.C

Lot Essay

This tapestry seat was woven at the Edinburgh Tapestry Co. circa 1930 by Ronald Cruickshank, under the supervision of the Head Weaver Lindsay Anderson. The Dovecot Studios of the Edinburgh Tapestry Co. were founded in 1912 by John, 4th Marquess of Bute. Incorporated as the Edinburgh Tapestry Company Ltd. in 1946, it remains one of the principal international producers of handwoven tapestry.
