The arms and crest are those of Stuart for John, 3rd Earl of Bute, K.G. (1713-1792).

The arms are encircled by the motto and insignia of the Order of the Thistle, whereas the slightly later engraved crest is encircled by the Order of the Garter. Lord Bute had been created a Knight of the Thistle in 1738. However, before he could be installed as a Knight of the Garter he had to resign from the order. This he did and was subsequently elected Knight of the Garter on 27 May 1762, an event recorded by the engraved crest. The dinner plates, lots 83-89, are similarly engraved with both the Garter and Thistle insignia, including those commssioned after Bute had resigned from the order. (32)
Provenance
Supplied to John, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792).
