Lot Essay

James Rait (1805-1877), J.P., D.L. for Forfarshire, was the son of John Rait (d. 1825) of Anniston and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of James Guthrie of Craigie. He was a Captain of 15th Hussars and Lt.-Colonel in the Spanish Legion. In 1838 he married Lady Clementina Drummond Ogilvie, second daughter of David, 9th Earl of Airlie, by whom he had two sons, Arthur John and William (d. 1895), and two daughters, Agnes and Gertrude.

The family seat was Anniston House, Arbroath, but this picture was painted at Moncreiffe, Bridge of Earn, Perthshire.
