Lot Essay

The battle of Jutland took place on 31 May 1916 when the British fleet under Admiral Jellicoe making a routine sweep of the North Sea encountered the German Fleet under Vice-Admiral von Scheer. It was the first fleet action of the First World War and the first battle between Dreadnoughts and as a result of the British victory the Germans made no further attempts to challenge British naval superiority.
