Lot Essay

Archduke Charles of Austria (1590-1625) was the youngest brother of Emperor Ferdinand II and became Master of the German Order in 1619.

Sir Ellis Waterhouse in 1948, perhaps aware of the 1799 inventory, suggested an attribution to Boeckhorst (annotation in his copy of the 1883 exhibition catalogue).
