Lot Essay

The Valkhof, a large castle founded by Charlemagne (774-814) by the River Waal at Nijmegen, was torn down in 1796.

Dalens was probably a pupil of Moses van Uyttenbroeck, for whom he contributed figures and animals to a number of landscapes, and whose style he imitated. The present picture appears to be the only landscape he painted in the style of Jan van Goyen.

We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for confirming the attribution.
