A small Attic black-figure neck-amphora, belonging to the Dot-Band Class
End of 6th Century B.C.
Black lip, top unpainted, neck painted within, handles unpainted beneath, below the handles is a palmette cross with lateral flowers and one pendent and a central dot, neck decorated with lotus and palmette chain on each side. Above the scenes are alternating black and red tongues, below them horizontal lines and a zigzag of dots, rays around the foot, foot black to outer edge
A: Herakles fighting the Amazons, the hero wearing lion skin, holding sword in raised right hand, bow and quiver slung over his shoulder, to his left an Amazon in Scythian dress with quiver, holding bow and spear, to his right two Amazons dressed as hoplites with high-crested helmets holding spears and shields
B: Departure of a warrior: two central figures stand side by side, behind circular shield with dolphin device, a hoplite holding the shield in left hand wearing Corinthian helmet and greaves and holding two spears in his right hand, beside him an archer in Scythian dress holding bow, in front and behind the pair stand single cloaked attendants each holding spear, added red and white detail throughout, (repaired from very few fragments with very minor restoration)
