The absence of wear on the rim of item five suggests that this bowl may have been intended originally for burial use and was probably deposited in a sealed grave. A similar, but slightly larger, bowl was found in Grave VI at Herstal, Belgium and is now in the Musée Curtius, Liège (cf. M. Vanderhoeven, "Verres romains tardifs et mérovingiens du Musée Curtius" in Journées Internationales du Verre, Liège, 1958, pp. 53-56, no. 56, pl. 15; and W. Haberey, "Spätantike Gläser aus Grabern von Mayern" in Bonner Jahrbücher, CXLVII, 1942, pp. 249-284, fig. 7b). Another similar bowl was recovered from a grave in Cologne together with a glass jug and a greyware pottery jar (illustrated in J. M. Morin-Jean, La Verrerie en Gaule sous l'empire romain, Paris, 1922/3, rev. ed. 1970) p. 266, fig. 346c.
