A Roman translucent glass footed dish
Circa 3rd Century A.D.
With flaring tooled foot, the vertical sides with everted rim, 7 5/8in. (19.3cm.) diam.; a heavy pale blue glass plain hemispherical bowl with ground-down rim, 2½in. (6cm.) high; a translucent glass footed bowl, on high ring foot with diagonal tooled marks, the high sides with rounded rim, 3rd-4th Century A.D., 4 5/8in. (11.9cm.) diam.; and a pale blue glass four-sided jug, with short cylindrical neck and everted mouth with inward-folded rim, wide applied strap handle applied at the upper neck and shoulder, second half of 1st Century/2nd Century A.D., 4¼in. (10.8cm.) high (4)

Lot Essay

Item four: Heavy-walled square bottles were developed to ease the packing and storage of glass bottles together. They were practical in that they could be tightly packed and so made efficient use of space and were less likely to break. They were to become one of the most common types of storage bottles and were shipped throughout the Roman Empire.
