Lot Essay

Jacques van Oostenrik, called Dautriche, maître in 1765

The flowerhead and trellis marquetry is a constant feature on breakfront commodes by Dautriche. Apart from the present commodes, it is a decoration employed on a closely related commode from the collection of the Earls of Ashburnham, Ashburnham Place, sold at Sotheby's London, 26 June 1953, lot 111, and again anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 27 October 1990, lot 83.

All the mounts on these commodes can be found on further examples. The apron mount appears on a commode in Schloss Ludwigsburg, as well as on a closely related commode sold anonymously at Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 5 December 1974, lot 88. The Vitruvian scrolls to the frieze are on a commode sold at Burat, Paris, 17 June 1937, lot 139, an encoignure sold at Couturier Nicolay, Paris, 14 September 1986, a commode with Galerie Lupu in 1982, previously in a sale in Paris 14 June 1977, lot 120, and on a commode from the collection of the Duke of Wellington at Stratfield Saye.
