A GEORGE III GILTWOOD MIRROR
The central rectangular divided plate with a C-scroll band and flanked by mirrored pilasters with gothic tracery and acanthus foliage, the waisted top-section with various trefoils and ogival arches centred by a shaped mirror cresting with a splayed eagle on foliate branches below a pierced canopy with pomegranate pendants and surmounted by a plume spray, the base with a C-scroll shaped mirrored cartouche surmounted by a foliate canopy and flanked by rockwork, restorations and re-gilt, a plate of the left hand mirrored border replaced, the pierced cresting possibly later

Lot Essay

The design of this mirror combining Chinese and Gothic elements, relates to two engravings by Ince and Mayhew, published in their The Universal System of Household Furniture, between 1759 and 1762 (plates LXXXII and LXXXVI).

A very similar pair of mirrors were sold by J.R. Gladstone, Esq., Donnington Grove, Newbury, Berkshire, Dreweatt Neate house sale, 1 May 1991, lot 141.
